Stolen Phone.No Sim Card?

This really annoying kid in my Phys Ed class has a t-mobile G2 and he always carries it around in his sweater and it always falls out of his packet. so im planning on stealing it and sell it since i have at&t, but can it be traced if i take out sim card, destroy it and turn off the phone for a while? how can i get it from not being traced.
