Starting college advice and boyfriend advice?

am going to be starting college soon(uk) and going to a completely new place a long way from where I am living now and I wont have any friends or anyone I know when starting high school.Who should I become friends with? Boys or girls? are boys better friends? which are more fun and for what reasons? and advice for starting a new college in a new place,how to fit in and not seem weirdly outcast.
